Why haven't I received a response to my email/course request?

We try to answer all emails and give status updates on course requests in a timely manner. If you have not received a reply within 2 business days of sending an email or request, please tell us. You can contact Golfshot directly at support@golfshot.com.

There are occasional problems with delivering large course images, and some members are not able to receive email replies from Golfshot. You may need to add golfshot.com as an exception in your email client so that our email response is treated as a trusted sender.

Does Golfshot measure to the Front, Center and Back of Greens?

Yes. Golfshot measures distances to the Front, Center and Back of Greens along with up to 40 professionally mapped targets per hole. Targets include a Golfshot-exclusive: Custom Layup distances that are tailored to YOUR club averages!

How do I assign clubs to layup distances?

Go to Account > GPS Settings > Layups. You can assign your favorite layup clubs and set the ideal distance for each. Golfshot will then display all layups based on your ideal distances.

How do I view/switch between GPS Aerial View and GPS List View?

Press the tab at the bottom that says "GPS" or "Aerial" - this will toggle between the two options when available.

Are all courses on the course list mapped with GPS? And do they all have aerials?

You can select a course to view the Google aerial that is available. Any course with a clear aerial has been or can be mapped. Golfshot can also use other aerial sources to map, so many courses may have GPS List available even if the Google aerial is not.

At http://www.golfshot.com/GolfCourses you can search through our library of mapped courses. There is a key indicating what information is available for each course and you can select the course to view the current Google image.

Why does Golfshot ask me to Request GPS when I load my course?

Either the course doesn't have a Google Maps image available to map, or this is a course file that you have setup the scorecard for. If you contact us to request a course, you can send in the scorecard and Golfshot will map the course.

What do the little red/green locked symbols indicate?

The red symbol indicates that the GPS signal is not acquired. A green locked symbol indicates that the GPS signal is connected and that distances are locked in.

How do I use the Track Last Shot feature?

To use the Track Last Shot feature press the Golfball icon at the location of the shot. Be sure that the GPS signal is acquired as indicated by a green locked symbol. When you arrive at the location of the shot press the done icon. This will provide you with the linear distance between the start and stop point. Currently this information does not record into statistics.

Why is my GPS sporadic?

The GPS is handled by the iPhone. The Golfshot software doesn't control this aspect of the phone. Most members report great results with their iPhone's GPS signal, but it can take some understanding of how the phone handles GPS.

The GPS being sporadic is likely a result of the iPhone trying to preserve battery life. It has an “Auto-Lock” setting, which goes into effect after you haven’t interacted with the phone for a period of time. This Auto-Lock shuts down many of the phone’s services including the display and the GPS signal. When you un-lock the phone, the signal can take 30 seconds to a minute to reacquire GPS signal. The phone will still alert the Golfshot software that it has good signal even during this reacquisition time.

You can change the Auto-Lock setting for your iPhone by going to Home > Settings > General > Auto-Lock.

If you set this to Never, you may run into battery issues (be sure it’s fully charged at the start of your round). You can also buy devices that add charge to the phone if needed. These are available at the Apple Store and elsewhere.

Why does my GPS say, “acquiring satellites” but never connects?

GPS never acquiring appears to be an issue with a small number of iPhones. We have a number of tips that may help you obtain better GPS results:
• Make sure that you have the latest firmware installed for the phone. You can check for this in iTunes by plugging in your phone and clicking on your phone name under DEVICES. Then press the “Check for Update” button.
• Restart the phone by pressing and holding the top and bottom buttons on the phone for about 5 seconds and then sliding it to power off. After it goes black, press the Hold button for about 3 seconds until you see the Apple logo.
• If these steps don’t work, you can try turning 3G off (Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G – set to OFF). Then go into the Maps app and find your location while outside. Once found, go back into settings and turn 3G back ON.
• Finally, you can set Auto-Lock in your settings to NEVER and take the iPhone outside with the Maps app open. Allow the phone to see a clear view of the sky for at least 15 minutes.

The GPS functionality is not something that our software controls. If the above tips do not help, you may need to take your phone in to Apple, as the issue could be a result of hardware problems.

It may also be beneficial to hard reinstall the software. To do a hard reinstall:
Press and hold the Golfshot icon on your iPhone until all the icons begin to "wiggle". At this point there will be an "X" in the corner, which will remove the app from your phone. Then go into the app store on your iPhone and select Golfshot and re-download and install the app (you will not be charged again for the app). Once Golfshot is installed press Login and enter the requisite information. After you have logged in, your app should sync, downloading all the courses in your course regions.

What is the cost? Is there an annual fee?

Golfshot: Golf GPS is now featured in the Apple App Store at introductory pricing and no subscription.

This is a full-featured version of the app and will not incur an annual fee. The current Golfshot: Golf GPS app and feature set will remain subscription free for all customers that purchase during this introductory period. We are trying to provide an affordable way for golfers to try Golfshot: Golf GPS and want to reward early customers with a subscription free way to join.

We are working on software upgrades for the future. Many will be free and some will be fee based. As with any piece of software, upgrades to new, more advanced features will include a cost and we are working to allow discounted costs for current customers who choose to upgrade to these new features in future products.

Is there a demo/trial version?

There isn’t a demo program for the GPS, although you can view Turnberry: Golf GPS for a free preview of how it appears for iPhone 3G and 3GS users.

The Scorecard and Handicap app is available for 99 cents.

What phones can be used for Golfshot?

Golfshot is designed to work on all versions of the iPhone. However the GPS features will only work on iPhones with a GPS chip installed - the iPhone 3G and 3G-S. The iPhone 3G-S is the top performer in terms of application speed and GPS responsiveness.

Will Golfshot be made available for other platforms?

We only support iPhone and iPod Touch with the current software. Future software releases may expand to other platforms. We have not released a timeframe for when these releases will be available.

Will Golfshot work while traveling abroad?

Downloading the aerial images requires an internet connection. We recommend talking with your service provider prior to travelling internationally to determine the network charges that you may incur through using internet on your iPhone.

We suggest syncing with the region you are traveling to prior to leaving your home country. This will provide you with the scorecard and GPS information for the courses mapped in the country you are traveling to.

What features are available to iPod Touch users?

Golfshot: Golf GPS is not optimum for the iPod touch. Google requires an internet connection to view images for the course. You are able to download images with WiFi and they will be available on the course if you keep the app open (use the hold button on top of the iPod to put to sleep - but do not press the round home button that will close the app).

Golfshot will display the yardages from your selected teebox, but the images will only be available using the process listed above.
When users are able to use a wifi connection to download the images, they can then view hole distances from their selected tee-box, and plan their approach shots with TouchPoint positioning - touch a target anywhere on the hole and get the distances to that point from your selected tee-box and from that point to the green.

For iPod touch, we recommend the scorecard and handicap edition called simply, Golfshot.

How can I request additional features?

Please send your feature requests to requests@golfshot.com. We are happy to hear comments and suggestions from our users. We are dedicated to building the best possible mobile application for golf.

How do I enable Stableford scoring?

The Stableford scoring system will be included in an update prior to the end of 2009.

How would I begin a round at a hole other than 1?

You can move to any hole and begin your play there. To scroll quickly, press and hold the arrow while on the Score screen. When you press and hold the arrow keys you can scroll through 18 holes in about 4-5 seconds.

You can also move back holes during the round - for example, play the front nine after completing the back nine. In addition, Golfshot will only track statistics and handicap for holes that you play. So if you play 9 holes of an 18-hole course, it will calculate the statistics and handicap correctly.

What PGA Tour style Statistics are available?

• Fairways Hit, Missed Left & Right
• Greens in Regulation
• Recovery Scrambling
• Sand Saves
• Putts per Hole and per GIR
• Scoring Averages on Par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s
• Scoring Percentages
• Compare against Friends, Tiger, Anyone!
• Clubs measured include Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges

Why are Fairways Hit blank for par 3’s?

In measuring golf statistics, Fairways Hit isn’t calculated on par 3’s because the goal is to hit the green. This is measured with Greens in Regulation.

What is Recovery Scrambling?

Recovery Scrambling measures any time you miss a Green in Regulation, but still score par or better. It’s a great way to measure the improving effectiveness of your short game.

What if I don’t want to record Statistics, only Score?

Turn off logging statistics by going to the Home Screen/Settings/Golfshot and turn the Log Statistics setting to off. Then you will only be asked for score and putts without seeing the statistics entry screen.

How can I record Detailed Statistics for all four golfers?

Each golfer can record their own statistics on their iPhone. The next release will allow you to opt-in to track additional statistics for your foursome and send them emails similar to your own.

How can I measure additional Statistics?

Please send your feature requests to requests@golfshot.com. We are working on an Advanced Scorecard and are excited to receive our customers’ input in building the best applications for golf.

How do I use a different Tee Club than those shown?

You can turn clubs On and Off in your Club Set.
• Go to the Golfshot Launch Screen and click on the Accounts button.
• Select Score Settings and then Club Set.
• Set each club in you bag to On and set the others to Off.

How is the automatic handicap measured?

An official handicap is a rating of your score versus par adjusted for course difficulty. Ideally, you should join a local golf club and establish an official USGA Handicap. You can enter this official handicap into Golfshot by selecting Account from the Launch Screen. If you wish to keep this handicap up-to-date manually, go to Account and then Score Settings and turn Auto Handicap to Off.

If you leave Auto Handicap On, the Golfshot app will measure an approximate handicap allowing users to play with their friends using handicap scoring. However an official handicap is always recommended.

How do I enable tracking statistics for my whole party?

If you go to Account > Score Settings > Log Statistics you can turn on which statistics are tracked for the primary and secondary golfers. This information will be emailed to each golfer once the round is saved when you have an internet connection.

What does "PTY" mean?

“PTY” stands for Penalty Shots. This is where you record the number of strokes in your score that were due to penalties.

What are Sand Saves?

Sand saves measure any time you have a bunker shot on a hole and still score par or better. It’s a great way to measure the improving effectiveness of your sand game.

How does Golfshot calculate Sand Saves and Penalty shots?

The initial score screen will ask you how many shots and putts you hit for the hole. Based on this information Golfshot calculates how many additional strokes are feasible for sand or penalty shots.
For example, you hit par on a par 5 with a 2 putt. The drive and two putts will limit the remaining sand and penalty strokes to 2. The sum of the total number of strokes cannot exceed the score for that hole.

What is Greens in Regulation (GIR)?

A Green in Regulation occurs when you land on the green at least 2 strokes under par. For a par 3, this allows 1 stroke to reach the green. For a par 4, this allows 2 strokes to reach the green. For a par 5, this allows 3 strokes to reach the green.

Why measure Putts per Hole and Putts per GIR?

Putts per hole is a traditional statistic measuring your average for the round. It is a good measure of your short game and putting game combined. Putts per GIR is a better measure of your putting skills alone, as it eliminates most chip shots that would start your first putt closer to the hole.

Can scorecards be viewed in Meters and Yards?

Yes. You can set your preference under Account > Score Settings.

Can I edit a scorecard from a previous round or change the date?

Yes. Select a previous round under the Scorecards button. You can then choose to edit the round or change the date.

Why does the white scorecard keep popping up? How do I get rid of it?

The picture of the scorecard is brought up by rotating the device to a horizontal position. If you rotate back, it should return to the previous screen.
You can disable this option by going to Account > Score Settings and turning Scorecard When Rotated to Off.

What courses are mapped?

We have over 15,000 courses mapped – mostly in the US, but we’re adding them worldwide. You can search and view courses at golfshot.com/GolfCourses. You can also request new courses for free from the same page.

Why don’t courses appear for a neighboring state when searching nearby courses?

The Nearby Courses list will only display courses for regions you are synced with. By default, your state/province/country is synced. You need to turn on sync to view courses from other regions.
• Open Golfshot and click the Accounts button.
• Select Course Sync Regions.
• Find the regions you wish to sync with and set them to On.
Press Save and then Sync. You will then be able to see courses for the new region in the Nearby Courses search.

How do I add courses in my country?

Golfshot is adding courses in order of the most populated golfing countries. In addition, we are committed to adding scorecards for every requested course worldwide. Any missing courses, from any country, can be requested by sending a front and back scorecard image. This can be done here.

Why is there no Aerial/GPS for my course?

The images come from Google Maps or Bing Maps. It is up to these image sources to provide new images for the course. We are not privy to their timing on refreshing the images, but we will certainly update the course as soon as it's ready.

You can search for courses at http://maps.google.com Or at http://www.bing.com/maps/ Any course that appears on these sites can be mapped by the Golfshot team.

If the course is not visible in these aerial image sources we have another means for collecting the GPS data for your course.

If you are willing to help gather GPS data for the course, we have created a way to allow customers to create a GPS List View of the course even before an updated aerial image is available. If you are interested in this, please tell us and we’ll send you additional information on this program.

How can I play my 9-hole course as an 18-hole round?

The Golfshot software is setup to treat 9-hole courses as an individual round. For now, you need to play the course twice to complete as an 18. The statistics will calculate correctly for each nine, and the distances will measure from your location if you are at a different teebox for the back nine.

We are working on updating the software to allow golfers to play a nine-hole course twice as an 18-hole course. This will be a free update.

How do I add a new course?

The easiest way is to let Golfshot add it. Just upload a front and back scorecard image here. We will add new courses and new tee boxes.
If you prefer, you can also click on the Edit button in the upper right corner of the Courses screen. However this will only set the information for your own use.

How can I prolong battery life?

The battery life is something that can affect some members, although most report good results. The battery drain is not specifically a result of our software, but is a result of using GPS and having the phone on for an extended period of time.

These are tips to limit the battery use of the phone while golfing:
1. Make sure that the phone is fully charged prior to a round.
2. Go into your iPhone settings and turn Wi-Fi and Notifications both OFF.
3. While still in Settings, go into General Settings and turn Bluetooth OFF. While still in Settings, go into General Settings and turn Bluetooth OFF. Then go into Network and turn Enable 3G to OFF.
4. Finally, you can set Auto-Lock based on your preference. If you set this to Never, you are more likely to have battery issues, but you will get the most responsive GPS. You should still manually lock the phone if you will not need distance for a while. Unlock a minute prior to your next distance reading.
5. There are a number of great small rechargeable devices available to add charge to the iPhone. These are available though the Apple store and elsewhere.

Licensing restrictions put in place by our image providers prevent us from caching aerial images. The GPS Targets View, GPS functionality, Scorecard, and Statistics all work great without a connection.
